Breaking is coming home - the Red Bull BC One World Final returns to the birthplace of hip hop. This is a perfect time to celebrate the culture with a magical documentary film where we will showcase some of the world’s most amazing breaking talent, tell compelling personal stories, create wonderful dance scenes and tell the story of how breaking made it’s way from the streets of New York all the way to achieving Olympic status in the upcoming 2024 games.

THE DETAILS
Breaking is coming home
In Groundbreakers we follow five competitors from around the U.S and the world to create a 90 minute feature documentary film made for the big screen.
Our main characters will be carefully selected from the pool of dancers competing in the finals.
They all come with different back stories and are from very different backgrounds. We follow them all the way through the finals and we are there when they experience the birthplace of hip hop.
We tell the history of breaking through interviews with legendary breakers as well as some old, cool archive footage from back in the day.
In this film we put a lot of effort into the visual elements and add production value to some of the dance scenes, making them stand out as pieces of art in themselves. Crane shots, drone shots and extreme locations will take this film to one of a kind.

the competitors
In this film we follow 5 competitors.
One is local, and the others are from other parts of the U.S. and international. Think Paris, Seoul and Tokyo.
We visit them in their home towns and talk about life, dreams, struggles and how and why they fell in love with breaking.
We are there when they enter an empty Barclays Center and realize how far they’ve come.
We let them experience the hip hop culture of Brooklyn.
These competitors come from very different backgrounds.
Some were born right in the heart of hip hop, others have taken a more surprising road to end up here. What they all have in common is a deep love for their art form and an impressive drive to keep pushing boundaries.
The dancers will be casted out of the pool of people who have made it to the finals and the important part here will be that they all come with different kinds of stories.
They don’t have to be favorites to win.
GROUNDBREAKERS
In the film we also get to meet some of the most influential and groundbreaking figures in breaking.
In beautifully shot sit down interviews they will make the history of this art form come alive and they will guide us from the early days all the way to how breaking took over the world and finally became an Olympic event.
These parts will also include amazing archive footage and scenic reenactments of important events.

Throughout the film we will also sprinkle out lots and lots of breaking.
These scenes will be shot in a variety of eye catching locations - both indoors and out in the city. They will be meticulously planned - choreography, music, shooting style, location, decor and lighting.
Here we think it would be cool to use the dancers from Nets Hype Team & Red Bull sponsored dancers. These scenes could also be used outside the context of the film.
In this version the production value goes to the absolute top. With extreme locations, crane shots and dance scenes taken out of a music video will make this film a true visual experience.

MOOD
With this film we are looking to move breakdance from the streets into the elegant ball room of the party.
With the sport being an Olympic sport 2024, things like sit down interviews would be shot in a very high end style. Beautifully lit in breathtaking locations worldwide.
We will shy away from the expected locations, like the “empty warehouse” or in front of a graffiti wall, and rather use a high end, classy location.
This will create a “seriousness” of the sport, and be a contrast from the street-style we are so used to see breakdance taking place.
For the Verité part of the film, it will be shot in a very stylistic way, with cinema as inspiration. Prime Cinema lenses and a mix of smooth hand held camera, dolly, and car rig shots we are creating a beautiful, yet fun and diverse cinematic experience.
A big part of the scenes will be directed to make "Groundbreakers" visually very pleasing.
For the presentation of our dancers we will shoot them dancing in a series of location to create a high end documentary film that can compare itself to all the high end documentary films out there today.
